Cool signs from symbols for nicknames. Cyrillic characters are used more often than others for homographic attacks on non-Latin domains
Eric Raymond emphasizes that displaying this logo does not mean that the wearer is declaring himself a hacker, since one cannot declare oneself a hacker: it is a title that is assigned by the community. The use of a logo, however, means that the wearer shares the goals and values of the hacker community.
This logo is not a copyrighted image or trademark and its use for commercial purposes is neither encouraged nor prohibited.
The idea of using the models from Life as symbols was suggested before Eric's proposal by Argentine hacker Sebastian Vane in March 2003.
Why glider?
The glider is a suitable emblem in all respects. Let's start with history: The Game of Life was first described publicly in Scientific American in 1970. It was born at almost the same time as the Internet and Unix. It has fascinated hackers ever since.
In Life, there are simple rules for interacting with neighbors that lead to unexpected, startling complexity that would be impossible to predict based on rules alone - the phenomenon of emergence. This is a clear parallel to the emergence of such unexpected phenomena in the hacker community as open source software development.
The glider meets the criteria for a good logo. It's simple, bold, hard to confuse with anything else, and easy to put on a mug or t-shirt. It can be varied, combined with other emblems, and can be turned into a repeating background pattern.

Why this emblem?
The glider is an appropriate emblem on many levels. Start with history: the Game of Life was first publicly described in Scientific American in 1970. It was born at almost the same time as the Internet and Unix. It has fascinated hackers ever since.
In the Game of Life, simple rules of cooperation with what's nearby lead to unexpected, even starting complexities that you could not have predicted from the rules (emergent phenomena). This is a neat parallel to the way that starting and unexpected phenomena like open-source development emerge in the hacker community.
The glider fulfills the criteria for a good logo. It"s simple, bold, hard to mistake for anything else, and easy to print on a mug or T-shirt. It could be varied, combined with other emblems, or modified and infinitely repeated for use as a background.

An excerpt characterizing the Hackers Emblem
The action is completed. The last role has been played. The actor was ordered to undress and wash off the antimony and rouge: he would no longer be needed. And several years pass in which this man, alone on his island, plays a pathetic comedy in front of himself, petty intrigues and lies, justifying his actions when this justification is no longer needed, and shows the whole world what it was like what people took for strength when an invisible hand guided them.
The manager, having finished the drama and undressed the actor, showed him to us.
- Look what you believed! Here he is! Do you see now that it was not he, but I who moved you?
But, blinded by the power of the movement, people did not understand this for a long time.
The life of Alexander I, the person who stood at the head of the countermovement from east to west, is even more consistent and necessary.
What is needed for that person who, overshadowing others, would stand at the head of this movement from east to west?
What is needed is a sense of justice, participation in European affairs, but distant, not obscured by petty interests; what is needed is a predominance of moral heights over one’s comrades—the sovereigns of that time; a meek and attractive personality is needed; a personal insult against Napoleon is needed. And all this is in Alexander I; all this was prepared by countless so-called accidents of his entire past life: his upbringing, his liberal initiatives, his surrounding advisers, Austerlitz, Tilsit, and Erfurt.
During a people's war, this person is inactive, since he is not needed. But as soon as the need for a common European war arises, this person at that moment appears in his place and, uniting the European peoples, leads them to the goal.
The goal has been achieved. Since the last war of 1815, Alexander is at the height of possible human power. How does he use it?
Alexander I, the pacifier of Europe, a man who from his youth strove only for the good of his people, the first instigator of liberal innovations in his fatherland, now that he seems to have the greatest power and therefore the opportunity to do the good of his people, while Napoleon exile makes childish and deceitful plans about how he would make humanity happy if he had power, Alexander I, having fulfilled his calling and sensing the hand of God on himself, suddenly recognizes the insignificance of this imaginary power, turns away from it, transfers it into the hands of those despised by him and despised people and says only:
- “Not for us, not for us, but for your name!” I am a human being too, just like you; leave me to live as a human being and think about my soul and God.
Just as the sun and each atom of the ether is a ball, complete in itself and at the same time only an atom of a whole inaccessible to man due to the enormity of the whole, so each personality carries within itself its own goals and, at the same time, carries them in order to serve common goals inaccessible to man. .
A bee sitting on a flower stung a child. And the child is afraid of bees and says that the purpose of a bee is to sting people. The poet admires a bee digging into the calyx of a flower and says that the bee’s goal is to absorb the aroma of flowers. The beekeeper, noticing that the bee collects flower dust and brings it to the hive, says that the bee's goal is to collect honey. Another beekeeper, having studied the life of a swarm more closely, says that the bee collects dust to feed young bees and breed the queen, and that its goal is to procreate. The botanist notices that, by flying with the dust of a dioecious flower onto the pistil, the bee fertilizes it, and the botanist sees the bee’s purpose in this. Another, observing the migration of plants, sees that the bee promotes this migration, and this new observer can say that this is the purpose of the bee. But the final goal of the bee is not exhausted by either one, or the other, or the third goal, which the human mind is able to discover. The higher the human mind rises in the discovery of these goals, the more obvious to it is the inaccessibility of the final goal.
Although it is already 2018, homography attacks are still a very popular attack vector among cybercriminals. For example, in March 2018, unknown attackers attacked users of the famous cryptocurrency exchange Binance. The fact is that shortly before the incident, the criminals conducted a series of successful phishing campaigns, as a result of which they collected credentials from the accounts of many users of the resource. This was mainly done using fake domains that imitated the real Binance domain using Punycode.
At the root of this problem is the use of Punycode - a standardized method for converting sequences of Unicode characters into ACE sequences, which consist only of alphanumeric characters, as allowed in domain names. Punycode was designed to unambiguously convert domain names into a sequence of ASCII characters.
Unfortunately, many of the world's alphabets have characters that look exactly the same as their Latin counterparts (see the full list). This feature is exploited by attackers to carry out homography attacks. So, in the summer of 2017, unknown people targeted users of the WhatsApp messenger. They sent victims links that supposedly led to the messenger’s official website, when in fact the links led to the fake domain shһatѕarr.com.
In 2016, in the same way, google.com to ɢoogle.com, and at the end of April 2017, Chinese researcher Xudong Zheng, that Chrome, Firefox and Opera browsers are vulnerable to virtually undetectable phishing attacks, with which attackers can register fake domains that are practically indistinguishable from the real resources of Apple, Google, eBay, Amazon and many other companies.
Now Farsight Security analysts have studied many examples of homography attacks to find out how attackers operate most often. To conduct the study, experts monitored the Internet for almost a year: from May 2017 to April 2018, analysts collected statistics on all domains that use non-Latin characters.
In total, the DNS cache scan helped detect 99,432,594 non-Latin domains (IDN, internationalized domain name). Of these, 35,989 were allegedly related to 466 major international brands from a variety of areas (from banking to retail). In fact, these domains belonged to criminals. In 91% of cases, these domains led to sites that the attackers tried to pass off as legitimate representatives of various companies on the network.
In most cases, only characters from one alphabet were used to spoof domain names. This is due to ICANN rules, according to which it is forbidden to mix different alphabets in a domain name (this measure is precisely aimed at countering homographic attacks). However, Farsight Security's analysis also revealed a number of domain names in which criminals ignored these rules and mixed alphabets.
The most popular method for implementing such homographic attacks turned out to be the use of Cyrillic characters, namely, mixing Latin and Cyrillic alphabet. Researchers believe that the popularity of the Cyrillic alphabet can be explained simply: it is very similar to the Latin alphabet. In second place in popularity was a combination of Latin and Greek characters, and in third place were Latin, Greek and Cyrillic characters combined.
Experts note that the use of characters from other alphabets in combination with Latin ones allows criminals to significantly increase the number of potential domain names that imitate a particular brand. Moreover, such variations in homographic attacks are much more difficult to detect.
Since you are interested in this article, the worst thing is behind you, namely, coming up with a nickname from scratch. But many people don’t like a “bare” name in Russian or English, since it doesn’t stand out too much from others, so various special characters will come to your aid, designed to diversify the familiar alphabet as much as possible and make your nickname unique. On this page you will find a large collection of various symbols, letters and emoticons.

Symbols for nicknames
The very first idea that comes to any player’s mind is to add beautiful symbols to their nickname. They can be all sorts of hieroglyphs, icons and even small pictures. The same cs go provides for the use of tens of thousands of additional characters, which are contained in special tables. A complete list of them can be found in the Unicode content, which is constantly updated with more and more new characters.
They resort to decorating a nickname with the help of symbols in cases where they specifically want to attract attention to themselves, or simply make a cool nickname. The most important thing in this matter is not to overdo it. One or two symbols will be enough, it’s just that some particularly strange individuals like to fill their nicknames to capacity with icons, so that they become difficult to perceive.
Now let's look at the specific symbols and the appropriate cases for their use. In general, the symbols in a nickname should emphasize it, and not hang like a dead weight. Now, if your name is “Thunderbolt,” then take it and add a lightning symbol to your nickname. It will immediately look more alive and beautiful. For unusual nicknames associated with death, corpses and the like, you can use the symbols of a cross, even a wing, if angels (or birds) appear somewhere in the name.
If you still found the old version of VKontakte from the end of the 2000s, you can remember how everyone who was not too lazy filled their names and information on the page with a ton of characters. In rare cases it looked cool, but for the most part, at that time there were so many people with badges that it quickly became mainstream and an attribute of a person not too close to the Internet. This moment still takes place in Odnoklassniki.
Some symbols may be displayed in colors other than those specified by the game, but the ability to create a colored nickname is not present everywhere. For example, in Unicode you can find an orange fire icon.
Letters for nicknames
There are also a great variety of letters for nicknames; letters from alphabets other than English and Russian are especially popular. Some Arabic/Chinese text in the nickname would look nice. Even if your nickname consists entirely of Arabic letters, this will already make you stand out on the Russian server.
There is still a fashion for using nicknames with all sorts of signs around the letters in Steam and Counter-Strike. You've probably seen people with a common nickname like Emperor, but each letter of the word was framed with squiggles, circles, and other elements. Those who want to seem cool and different from everyone else like to use this nickname.
By the way, with the help of these squiggles you can “break” the game, since the system allows you to set an unlimited number of strokes on one letter, this gesture is ugly, but you can have fun. Yes, each individual letter can be modernized with a dash or a small line, and this can be done in at least three floors. But you should not get too carried away so that your nickname is at least visible to others.
Emoticons for nicknames
A separate category of symbols for nicknames is emoticons. With the popularization of emoji, their symbolic counterparts began to be introduced into Unicode. They can be seen in some messengers, when someone inserted a regular emoticon into the title of a conversation, and in the messenger on the phone it was reflected as a symbol. It is these emoticon symbols that you can use for your nickname.
They are rarely used in games due to their cumbersomeness and inappropriateness, but in the same Skype you can mark your mood with an emoticon in your name every day. You won’t have to answer questions about your mood every day; all you have to do is write a smile in your nickname and you’re good to go.
Using symbols and emoticons, you can create entire stories in your name. Let's say you draw a couple of trees, stars and two smiley faces there. And the New Year's story is already ready with you and someone else. Again, you shouldn’t overdo it with this, since the abundance of emoticons in your nickname already looks ugly.
In general, the use of emoticons is only suitable for a certain atmosphere. They will only get in the way in the game, so write them only when necessary.
As a symbol of attitude towards hacker culture. The emblem depicts a “glider” (eng. glider) - one of the figures in the game “Life”.
