1080 ti working temperature in games. Temperature standards for video cards in various operating modes
Nvidia is improving its graphics cards and introducing new technologies. An innovation in the Nvidia Geforce GTX 1080 model was the manufacturing process - 16 nm, which made it possible to place 7.2 billion transistors in a small processor. As part of the new process technology, the frequency of the processor has increased, which has made it possible to achieve high performance. In the overclocking mode (Boost), the frequency of 1.8 GHz is reached, and this is not the limit. On serial video cards, overclocking to 2 GHz is possible without the need for a high thermal package.
The main parameters of the model:
- Manufacturing process: 16 nm.
- 7200 million transistors.
- Frequency: 1607 MHz.
- Number of shaders: 2560 pcs.
- 160 texture blocks.
- Memory: 2.5 GHz GDDR5X, 8 GB.
- Bus: 256 bits.
- Bandwidth: 320 GB/s.
- Power consumption: 180 W.
Depending on the manufacturer, the specifications of the GTX 1080 may vary slightly.
Overview of the Geforce GTX 1080 video card
Obviously, this video card is a gaming one - it is used on powerful platforms, since even at 4K resolution it will provide consistently high FPS in games. Considering its power consumption, it is important to know what kind of power supply is needed for the GTX 1080. The manufacturer indicates that the card consumes 180 watts, however, when overclocked, the power consumption will increase and reach 250 watts. Taking into account the energy consumption of other components, it is appropriate to select a power supply that provides power of at least 700 W, and preferably 1000 W.
Depending on the manufacturer, the power consumption of the GTX 1080 will vary. Also available to users is the EVGA PrecisionX utility, which allows you to overclock and thereby increase energy consumption, so this parameter cannot be accurately named.
As regards the working temperature GTX 1080, then in the "idle" mode, the card heats up to 33 degrees. When starting the game Crysis 3, this parameter was 82 degrees, and when maximum load in the FurMark program, the temperature rose to 104 degrees.

Overloading or mishandling can damage various computer components. The temperature of the video card is one of the important parameters that must be closely monitored.
In modern computers, there are two components that are affected by temperature - the CPU and the graphics card. These devices are also the most expensive. Ensuring their smooth operation is considered a priority. Temperature control inside the system unit is carried out by programs using sensors. The status of all devices is checked at system startup. But for the user, this information is not provided in a convenient form. It can be shown either in BIOS settings, or receive an overheating warning when it has already occurred. To make monitoring easier, it is recommended that you install one of the utility programs on your computer.
Temperature monitoring programs
To diagnose and promptly respond to failures, the user needs a program for measuring the temperature of the processor and video card. The following options can be distinguished:
- AIDA is a powerful diagnostic suite. Provides the ability to fully monitor all processes occurring in the computer. Good as a graphics card temperature gadget for Windows 7 and later. To use it, you need to find the “Sensors” tab after launch. After that, in the "Temperatures" section, monitor the CPU and GPU indicators. The GPU value will allow you to both check the temperature of the video card and compare it with the benchmark.
- HWMonitor is a browser based monitoring program. It allows you to simply check the temperature of the processor and video card without spending extra effort. It does not require installation and allows you to view the temperature once if there are doubts about the operation of the devices.
- GPU Temp is an effective program for checking graphics card temperature. The application does not require payment. After setting starts the measurement of heating in the current mode. It also keeps a record in the form of a graph that allows you to evaluate which applications heat up the device. It functions in the operating environment in the "Notifications" tab, so the program determines the temperature of the video card constantly and fixes it using logs.
- Speedfan is extremely easy to use. Allows you to both know the temperature of the video card and control the speed of rotation of the built-in fans, providing an optimal climate inside the computer.
Permissible heating values
To effectively manage the operation of the device, it is important to know what the temperature of the video card and processor should be for comfortable operation. Due to the architecture of these devices, the values \u200b\u200bare slightly different, for example:
- The optimal processor temperature is +35…+50°C. Under conditions of increased load, it can rise up to +60…+65°C. If the measurement shows higher values, you need to urgently turn off the computer and look for the cause in the cooling system.
- The maximum temperature of the graphics card is higher, it can be up to 85°C at maximum load. In quiet mode, the operating temperature of the video card is +40…+60°C. The main operational problems begin when using the device in games with high detail or complex 3D graphics. As a result of testing, it is possible to determine the threshold values of the temperature regime. If they are too high, it may be worth replacing the device with a more advanced one.
- The laptop is characterized by higher temperatures due to the layout of the device. At +60…+80°C, the processor can show stable operation, but failures are inevitable at values above 90°C. In addition, the Radeon video card is in an uncomfortable temperature regime greatly reduces the service life.
What can cause overheating
The main reason for the occurrence and the processor is the breakdown of the cooling system. The system components are as follows:
- Fans remove the resulting heat to the outside. A special built-in widget allows you to control the speed of the blades. It slows down over time due to dust ingress, which leads to failure of the cooling system. There are several common fans in the computer case that are fairly easy to replace. Radeon and Nvidia video cards also have one or more fans built-in, in case of failure of which it is necessary to contact the service. Before replacing, you need to clean by disassembling the components.
- The heatsink is made of a heat-conducting alloy and absorbs heat from the chip. It consists of thin aluminum plates, between which there is a cooling air bag. When a lot of dust is clogged between the first, the cooling efficiency is noticeably reduced. This raises the overall temperature of both the computer and laptop.
- The thermal paste ensures that the heatsink and the chip bond together for maximum thermal conductivity. Over time, it dries out, which drastically reduces the cooling efficiency. In addition, if applied too thick or unevenly carelessly, it will not cool effectively, leading to device failures.
Do not be afraid to do regular cleaning of the cooling system. In desktop computers, the modular layout makes it easy to remove the devices you need and then plug them back in. Cleaning a laptop is a little more difficult. In addition, there is very little space inside the mobile computer, so all components are in close proximity to each other.
The nozzles of all outlets of the laptop must be free of dust and open to allow hot air to escape. good decision there will be a purchase of a ventilated laptop stand, which will significantly improve heat dissipation from the case. For prevention and control, you need to install the temperature gadget of the processor and video card and regularly look at its values.
With abnormal deviations, it is necessary to look for the cause, and not wait until the devices melt and stop working. It is also important to know what the normal temperature of the graphics card allows it to run most stably for the best gaming experience.
Hello friends! As you probably know, any electronics gets hot during operation, so some devices need a powerful cooling system. Today I will tell you what is the normal temperature of the video card and how to find out this parameter.
What does temperature depend on and what does it affect
The operating temperature of this device, first of all, depends on the GPU used - the more powerful it is, the more it heats up. So, 1070 generates more heat during operation than, for example, 1050 or 1050 Ti.
Accordingly, such a device requires a more advanced cooling system. Therefore, in video cards from different brands that have structural differences, due to different cooling, there may be different temperatures.
The amount of video memory and its clock frequency do not actually affect the heating of the device: for example, the GTX 1060 Ti 6g will heat up no more than the GTX 1060 3gb - provided that the cooling system is the same and therefore the same heat sink.
In relation to devices manufactured by AMD, the above factors operate in the same way. At the same time, it was not noticed that despite the different architecture of ATI Radeon or Nvidia GeForce, they heat up more: structurally, these two brands are still similar.
It should be borne in mind that devices with a passive cooling system, that is, without fans, heat up more, although they are not as powerful. And a liquid cooling system has better heat dissipation, so a video card equipped with it will heat up less than a device with one or more coolers, even the most powerful ones.
If the operating temperature rises above normal, performance will decrease while the device is in operation. In games, FPS drops and freezes are possible, as well as third-party artifacts in any mode - flickering dots or stripes.
In case of critical overheating, it is possible to crash into a “blue screen” or restart the computer. If such phenomena are regularly observed, it is necessary to check the temperature and take measures to reduce it. Chronic overheating is fraught with a complete loss of performance of the device.
Normal temperature in different modes
In idle, a temperature of no more than 50 ° C is considered normal. If the test results show higher, then either the device does not work correctly, or even performs some operations in this mode.
In these cases, a common occurrence is a miner embedded in the OS in the form of a virus or the same “malware” on some site that farms cryptocurrency for its owner, without the permission of the visitor.
When the load increases, the operating temperature can rise up to 80 °C. The maximum should not exceed 90 °C. So if your video card heats up to 70 degrees when you start games or specific software, then this is normal: this temperature is considered normal when playing.
The same is true for mining, since remote computing is essentially no different from graphics rendering: the same load is applied to the GPU.
The optimum temperature should be 60 ° C, but only devices with an efficient cooling system can boast of this.
How to check GPU temperature
The easiest way is to install the free HWmonitor utility. It will be useful in that it also allows you to determine the operating temperature of the chipset, processor and hard drives. The program displays it in degrees Celsius and Fahrenheit.
Three parameters are displayed: current, as well as minimum and maximum, which is convenient for testing. Despite the English-language interface, using the utility is not difficult - there are no options and settings here, except for monitoring the parameters of interest.
How to lower it
Under the influence of circumstances, it may be necessary to reduce the operating temperature under load. You can use either one of the following methods, but all at once:
- Completely clean the inside of the system unit from dust, including the video card. Better air circulation means more efficient cooling. It is not recommended to use a vacuum cleaner or hair dryer with a metal nozzle for this purpose - only plastic. A discharge of static electricity can penetrate the board and cause the failure of one or more parts.
- Install additional fans inside the case, which will improve air circulation. Keep in mind that the noise emitted by the computer will also increase. Propellers need to be put on blowing out, not blowing in, so that the computer does not absorb all the dust that flies around the room.
- Disable auto overclocking in graphics card settings. Less power means less heat.
- Install a more powerful cooling system - remove the old stock fan and install a better or alternatively liquid cooling system. It should be remembered that cheap propellers are less efficient than "native" ones and are intended primarily for devices with a passive cooling system.
- Change thermal paste between GPU and heatsink. If the video card has been in use for some time, it is possible that the old thermal paste has simply dried up.
Here, in fact, are all the effective methods that I know. If you have something to add, feel free to discuss it in the comments. I also recommend reading publications about
Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Pascal Review | Temperature and noise level
Temperature and clock speed
During Nvidia's press conference in Austin, Texas, where it was unveiled, we were perplexed as to how the card's temperature remained in the 65°C range over and over again in the demos. To get a similar result, we tried setting the fan duty cycle to 100% and this turned out to be the easiest solution.
In our standard test system with an ambient temperature of 22°C, our measurements showed 68 - 69°C. In another room with an air temperature of 20°C and a lower Full HD resolution, we finally got the 65°C demonstrated at Nvidia's presentation. The noise level from the card was not very high for a large room filled with journalists, when comments from employees were heard from the speakers. However, in the office, the noise became much more noticeable.
Unfortunately, actual temperatures after three minutes of warm-up are significantly different from what we saw at Nvidia's press conference. It does not take long to reach the maximum target temperature of 83 - 84 degrees Celsius. And during the stress test, it reached 85 degrees.
Temperature, heating, ambient temperature 22 degrees Celsius (lower is better)
Look at the orange line. At the beginning of our test, we set the frequency to 2126 MHz, which subsequently settled at around 2088 MHz. Running at 1920x1080 not only saves 34W of heat, but helps achieve 2.1GHz GPU Boost.
Reaching the maximum target temperature, Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Pascal lowers GPU clock speed. During a gaming test, it drops to the base level, and there is no trace of GPU Boost left. The situation worsens even more during the stress test, in which the core frequency drops below 1607 MHz, although this is the lower threshold for Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Pascal .

Nvidia's direct heat sink cooler does the job just fine, but the GeForce GTX 1080 Founders Edition has well-defined limits that make it pointless to overclock the card for long or very high loads. At 1920x1080 resolution, the load is noticeably lower, but who buys a $700 graphics card for Full HD?
Idle temperature in infrared
More information can be found in the article "Measurement Science: Taking Accurate IR Thermal Readings"(English).
The hottest spot on the map Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Pascal in idle is one of the dual voltage regulator MOSFETs. 38 degrees Celsius is not much, especially since the card consumes less than 7 watts.

Infrared gaming temperature
Our measurements and photos show that the vapor chamber does a good job of keeping the card cool during gaming tests. The temperature of the board under the GPU is two to three degrees Celsius lower than that reported by the GPU's internal temperature sensor. If the cooling system were just a tiny bit better, Nvidia's thermal limit wouldn't be such a big deal.

Temperature in the stress test in the infrared spectrum
Notably, the voltage converters have almost no effect on the thermal efficiency of the card during the stress test. The main amount of heat is generated by the GPU, and during our stress test it was quite a lot. The board under the GPU reaches the temperature of the processor itself, and this heat is dispersed throughout the board. After a while, the heat reaches the memory modules and heats them up, but not above their thermal limit.

Of course, few people constantly run stress tests for several hours in a row. In other words, we do not see any problems with heating.
Fan speed and noise level

As usual, we measure in a soundproof chamber using our own silent test system. Under such conditions, we can measure noise starting at approximately 22 dB(A). Hardware limitations do not allow you to get below this level, although this video card did not even come close to it.

Let's look at noise figures Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Pascal during a gaming test, after the card has reached its maximum temperature (see temperature graphs above).
41.6 dB(A) is pretty good, especially when compared to cheaper GeForce GTX 980 cooler designs from partners. It is also 2dB(A) lower than the reference GeForce GTX 980.
During the stress test, the noise level rises to 46.8 dB(A). This is 3.2 dB(A) lower than the GeForce GTX 980. Also a good result.
These are very powerful and productive devices. They consume a lot of energy and get very hot. Therefore, it is very important that the temperature of the video card does not exceed critical values. Otherwise, it will inevitably lead to a decrease in performance and may even cause a breakdown. In this article, we will talk about what temperature can be considered normal for a modern one, and also consider several ways to solve overheating problems.
Faced with overheating of the video card, many users are interested in what is the normal temperature of the video card. depends on the graphics processor on which it is built, as well as the cooling system. Therefore, depending on the specific model, the value of the normal temperature may fluctuate. For example, passively cooled video cards, as well as mobile versions of video cards for laptops, heat up much more than their counterparts for regular desktop PCs.
However, it is possible to name the average temperatures for a typical graphics card. normal temperature video cards are:
- in idle mode up to 55 degrees Celsius;
- under load up to 80 degrees Celsius;
If your graphics card temperature regularly exceeds these values, then you have serious overheating problems.
But, how do you know that the temperature of the video card exceeds normal values? A significant increase in the temperature of the video card is accompanied by a decrease in performance. Unusual freezes will be observed in games, FPS will decrease. Image artifacts can also be observed: flickering dots, stripes. In the event of critical overheating, the computer may restart. If you notice such symptoms, you must urgently check the temperature of the video card using a special program.
Exists great amount temperature monitoring software. One of the simplest and most reliable is. It allows you to find out the graphics card, chipset and hard drives.
The HWmonitor program displays the temperature of the video card in Celsius and Fahrenheit. Three temperatures are indicated: current, minimum and maximum. This is very handy for testing.
In order to find out the temperature of the video card under load, just run the HWmonitor program and any demanding game. After closing the game, you can return to HWmonitor and find out to what maximum temperature you managed to warm up your video card.
How to return the normal temperature of the video card
The first thing to do in case of a significant increase in the temperature of the video card is to carry out. In this case, it is necessary to remove the video card and carefully remove all the dust that has accumulated on the fan blades, heatsink and the board itself. This can be done with a brush or compressed air. The procedure must be performed as carefully as possible. Otherwise, there is a risk of damaging the video card.
Removing dust will definitely have a positive effect on the temperature of the video card. If this is not enough, then you can improve the overall cooling of the system unit. This can be done using separate fans that are installed in the computer case to improve cooling.
These fans come in a variety of sizes. The most popular sizes are 80, 120 and 140 mm. Inspect your system unit to determine the size of the fan that will suit you. If possible, choose the largest possible fan. Large fans are quieter and more efficient.
In addition, there are cooling systems designed specifically for video cards. In most cases, such cooling systems perform significantly more efficiently than a standard cooling system. However, their installation requires skill. Therefore, with this task it is better to contact a specialist.
