General information
Stainless steel pipe is very popular in various industries. Such a product has increased strength, anti-corrosion resistance to aggressive chemical environments and retains its qualities at elevated temperatures. This product compares favorably with structures that have not been subjected to special processing.
According to the manufacturing method, stainless steel pipe is divided into two types:
- pipes electrowelded from corrosion-resistant steel;
- pipes seamless from corrosion-resistant steel.
The ratio between the wall thickness and the diameter of the product makes it possible to distinguish among the structures such varieties:
- especially thick-walled;
- thick-walled;
- thin-walled;
- especially thin-walled.
Pipes made of corrosion-resistant and heat-resistant steels are produced in accordance with GOST standards. Their improved characteristics are associated with the grade of steel from which they are made (there is a high carbon content in such a metal alloy).
Seamless production technology
The production of seamless stainless steel pipes can be hot rolled or cold rolled.
Hot-rolled production of stainless steel pipes consists of several cycles. First, the billet is heated in a furnace, then a sleeve is formed into which a mandrel is inserted and rolled on a continuous mill. After that, the sleeve is taken out, and the rear end is cut off. At the final cycle, the outer diameter is aligned, the product is calibrated and the ovality is eliminated. The workpiece is allowed to cool and cut to the required length.
Cold rolled stainless steel pipes are made from a billet that is pre-cleaned to remove the defective layer. Further heat treatment removes the residual stress of the metal and the scale that has appeared. The prepared workpiece enters the rolling mill, which can be of two types - warm or cold. The first type of rolling helps to give products plasticity, so this method is used in most cases. After the heating process, the metal is subjected to chemical and heat treatment, after which etching is carried out.
Pipes made of heat-resistant steel, with a wall thickness of less than 1 mm, at the final stage are run-in on a roller mill.
Technology of electrofusion production
Electric-welded pipes made of corrosion-resistant steel are produced on a pipe-welding line. Stainless steel sheets are used as raw materials. Welding with this technology is of several types:
- TIG welding - is performed with a tungsten electrode in an inert gas without the use of filler materials;
- plasma welding in combination with TIG welding;
- laser welding;
- welding with high-frequency currents;
- electron beam welding.
At the final stage of electrowelded production, a stainless steel pipe of large diameter is subjected to finishing of the outer and inner planes. This is done by grinding. Then comes the finishing, which can be electro-hydraulic, matt, electric or mirror polished.
Application area
Due to its characteristics, a stainless steel pipe of large diameter and standard sizes has found its application in various fields. It is indispensable in the transport and chemical industries, as it does not interact with other substances. It is used in the petrochemical and gas industries, nuclear power, electric power, construction and architecture.
When laying main pipelines and installing industrial tanks that require large volumes, a stainless steel pipe of large diameters has successfully proven itself.
The demand for stainless steel corrugated pipe is also growing, especially in the decoration of residential and industrial premises. With its help, floors and walls are insulated, electrical wiring is isolated, it serves as an eyeliner to radiators and air conditioners. Pipe steel AISI from corrosion-resistant steel has found its application in the food industry.
All types of these products are also used for domestic needs.

Assortment of round stainless pipes
A wide range of these products allows you to choose the option most suitable for a particular operational purpose.
Seamless products do not have a longitudinal seam, which provides the same strength characteristics over the entire surface. Due to its high strength, this type of rolled metal is used for transportation and storage of media under pressure and in a wide temperature range. Full-bodied faceted or round ingots are used as the starting material. Hot rolled products have low surface quality and dimensional accuracy. Cold forming makes it possible to correct the shortcomings of hot-rolled steel and obtain products with very thin walls - from a few microns.
Welded round pipes- the most common option compared to seamless steel, due to a combination of good strength characteristics and more affordable cost. Demanded for the transportation of gas and liquid media, used in the organization of household and technological pipelines internal and outdoor laying. The initial billet is flat rolled products. Longitudinal seams - straight (1 or 2) or spiral.
Areas of application for round tubes made of corrosion-resistant steels
- In the food industry. AISI 304/304L, AISI 316/316L/316Ti, AISI 321 stainless steel pipes are used, usually seamless or made by welding with a tungsten electrode in an inert gas environment (TIG welding). Tubular products designed to work in contact with food products are polished both from the outside and from the inside, which ensures high hygienic characteristics.
- In drinking water supply, thanks to inertness to the transferred environments.
- in the chemical and petrochemical industries.
- For the manufacture of decorative and functional elements of stairs, fences, interior items.
Profile stainless pipes
Welded products of rectangular or square section are widely used. Manufacturing stages: molding of a blank from a strip with further formation of a longitudinal weld. Calibration is used to improve the geometric parameters. According to the wall thickness, a thin-walled and thick-walled pipe is distinguished.
Unlike tubular products of round section, profile products are usually not used for the transmission of liquid and gaseous media. The main areas of their application:
- construction - creation of frames for structures for domestic and infrastructural purposes;
- furniture manufacturing;
- production of household or medical equipment, industrial equipment, interior items;
- open cable laying - as a decorative and protective casing.

Stainless steel pipes used for the installation of water supply and heating systems have a number of advantages when compared with products made from conventional carbon steels. These advantages include durability (which can reach up to 400 years), as well as the hygiene of the material.
In addition, the inner diameter of pipes made of stainless steel does not decrease over time due to the accumulation of oxidation products on their inner walls (and, of course, such products do not enter the water supplied through the pipes, which is especially important for domestic water supply). That is why stainless steel pipes are increasingly being replaced by products made from ordinary carbon steels, which, due to active oxidation, can last no more than 10–15 years.
Benefits of stainless steel
The advantages that stainless steel pipes have for heating and organizing water supply are primarily due to the properties of the material from which they are made. To include steel, in chemical composition containing at least 13% chromium. With a minimum chromium content in products made from it, they can be successfully used in an environment characterized by low aggressiveness. If the quantitative content of this element is brought to 17%, then the stainless steel already successfully resists the effects of even a 50% solution of nitric acid. That is why pipes made of stainless steel alloy are an ideal material for arranging water supply and heating systems.
The surface of stainless steel pipes does not oxidize under the influence of acidic and alkaline solutions, provides high hygienic characteristics of the water transported through them. These qualities, along with exceptional durability, make these products the best option for equipping enterprises operating in the food and pharmaceutical industries.
When choosing stainless steel pipes for arranging a plumbing or heating system, one should take into account their high cost and more significant installation costs. Meanwhile, such pipes will not have to be changed after 10-15 years and they will be regularly Maintenance, which means that the costs will fully pay for themselves. It should also be borne in mind that when using the crimping technology, the installation of stainless steel pipes takes a minimum amount of time.
In what cases can stainless steel pipes oxidize
In some cases, even stainless steel pipes can corrode. Rust pockets on the inner walls of such pipes appear if water is transported through them, which contains a significant amount of chlorine in its chemical composition. If the composition of the water returns to normal, the rusting process of the pipes will slow down, and they will retain their anti-corrosion properties.
A concentrated solution of chlorine, which is used to disinfect plumbing and other systems, can also cause corrosion of stainless steel pipes. In such cases, in order to eliminate the cause of corrosion, the pipes must be thoroughly flushed after the procedure is completed.
Stainless steel in the "warm floor" system
flexible stainless steel pipes
In the modern market, in addition to conventional stainless steel pipes, types are widely represented. Thanks to the advantages of such pipes, which were invented at the end of the last century, they are increasingly being used to solve a wide variety of tasks, both industrial and domestic.
So, pipes of this type are successfully used today for:
- installation of water supply networks through which both cold and hot liquids are transported;
- arrangement of such a heating system as a "warm floor";
- laying of gas communications;
- creating fire extinguishing systems that use water.
Stainless steel has a number of advantages, among which it is worth highlighting the following.
- Such products can be successfully operated in conditions that differ even in very low temperatures.
- Flexible stainless steel pipes are able to withstand even significant water hammer in water supply and heating networks.
- The high flexibility of such pipes, as well as their ability to accept any configuration, make it possible to use them for the installation of communications in hard-to-reach places and in rather cramped conditions.
- With the help of special fittings, which are distinguished by high strength and corrosion resistance, it is possible to carry out the installation of corrugated pipes made of stainless steel quite quickly. At the same time, savings in labor costs when establishing gas or water supply can reach 80%. It is also important that the laying of communications from such pipes does not require special training of personnel.
- The service life of a communication consisting of stainless pipes is measured by more than one hundred years, and the fittings with which they are connected can last at least 30 years (this is especially true when organizing urban water supply and heating).
- Corrugated pipes made of stainless steel are lightweight and compact (when assembled), which significantly reduces transportation costs.
Based on these advantages, we can conclude that stainless steel flexible pipes are an innovative solution that allows not only high-quality installation of gas and water supply systems, but also significantly saves money on such a procedure.
